I am an attorney turned grant writer because only .8% of philanthropic professionals identify as indigenous and, despite being 2% of the population, Native American communities/organizations only receive .4% of philanthropic dollars. Many of our communities lack basic needs such as clean drinkable water, indoor plumbing, or adequate housing that could all be funded by the hundreds of billions of dollars in grant funding awarded every year through federal and private foundation grants.
