Her research discovered critical health issues that were being ignored among children and adolescents. Such issues included high incidences of suicide attempts, sexual abuse and bullying. Risa knew it was not enough to just teach kids about world history, geometry, and biology. We need to teach them how to cope with anxiety, help a friend with depression, support a bullied classmate and more. HIP’s model, however, is innovative and sustainable in that it relies on the students to deliver the program. HIP trains student ambassadors to teach health education to their peers—at their own schools—in an effort to support and inform youth.
