The equipment and procedures utilized in long-term care facilities for patients' Activities of Daily Living (ADL) are inadequate. Hospital lifts, designed to move patients safely between bed and gurney, are not mobile or easy to use, and offer no patient independence. Wheelchairs provide some unassisted mobility, but assistance is required getting into and out of the chair. Wheelchairs deter rehabilitation for mobility and balance due to muscle atrophy in legs and core. Healthcare workers are often injured lifting heavy patients or arresting falls and have increased exposure to infectious disease such as Covid-19. We have completed the mechanical design of the Upward Mobility device and filed a Utility Patent. Specifications for an AI algorithm have been developed and a second generation prototype harness in in work. Buswell Biomedical plans to apply machine-learning algorithms (a subset of artificial intelligence (AI)) to detect and the mechanical Upward Mobility device to arrest falls while allowing patients to maintain both balance and independence.
